LAX People Mover: What’s New and What It Means for You
Big changes are rolling through LAX—literally. The new LAX People Mover, officially known as the Automated People Mover (APM), is shaping up fast, and if you’ve flown through Los Angeles recently, you’ve probably seen signs or construction zones hinting at it
What Is the People Mover?
Let’s keep it simple: it’s a 2.25-mile electric train system that connects LAX’s terminals to parking garages, a rental car hub, and Metro transit. Think of it as a long-overdue fix for LAX’s messy traffic and scattered layout.
When it’s fully up and running, you won’t need a shuttle bus to get to the terminals from parking or Metro. You’ll ride the train—smooth, fast, and free.
Where Things Stand Now
Construction’s nearly done on several key stations. As of mid-2025:
West and East CTA stations are finishing up interiors.
Intermodal Transportation Facility–West (ITF–West) is already serving as a parking and drop-off point.
The Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) Facility, one of the largest in the country, is almost complete and will connect directly to the train.
The tracks are already laid. You can actually see the trains being tested during off-hours. They’re quiet, sleek, and driverless.
What This Means for Travelers
No more guessing where your ride share pickup is. No more endless loops in terminal traffic. When it launches, the People Mover will run every two minutes during peak hours and take about 10 minutes end-to-end.
Travelers can expect:
Faster connections between terminals
A smooth link from Metro’s Crenshaw/LAX line straight to the airport
Easier transfers to rental cars without the chaos
Timeline: When Will It Be Ready?
Current projections aim for late 2025 as the full launch date. Testing is underway, and some limited access could roll out earlier.
That said, LAX has a history of shifting timelines, so while progress looks solid, it’s smart to stay updated before your trip.
What to Keep in Mind
If you're driving into LAX right now, expect some detours and lane shifts. Construction is still active around the station entrances. Allow a little extra time.
Also, note that LAX-it (the current rideshare pickup zone) might eventually get folded into the People Mover system—or even phased out. We’ll know more soon.
The LAX People Mover is more than just a train—it’s a major upgrade to how you get in and out of one of the busiest airports in the world. Once it’s live, it should cut down on stress, delays, and confusion.
